Google Converts Flash to HTML5

I read this article in InformationWeek and thought anyone that does web development would like to hear about this. Essentially, Google now provides you the ability to convert most Flash (still an early edition) into HTML5. You can upload a SWF file, and Swiffy will produce the HTML5 version which will run in modern browsers. I am sure Apple was pleased with this announcement! Chrome to Phone Feature

The Google Chrome to Phone feature enables an Android phone user to send links from your Chrome desktop browser to your Android mobile device instantly. This feature is a real time saver! By installing this extension in Chrome, you can select a web page, phone number, address or text and have it sent directly to your Android. Certain links launch the associated app on your Android, such as the YouTube app and the Google maps app. By highlighting a phone number in your browser and push the icon, your phone will start the phone dialer and insert the phone number so all you need to do is press dial on the phone. Very nice! Anything to save us time or improve the user experience is a plus.

This application requires Android 2.2 or later and Chrome 6 and above.

I am a little frustrated this evening. My wife always receives the new role outs of features to Gmail before me. That being said, the priority email is a great concept. The fact that it learns from your behavior and you can share your opinions to help in learning process is brilliant. Anything that helps me focus on important email is a blessing. The approach reminds me of how Pandora radio determines what types of music you enjoy. I better stop this short post, my wife noticed I am looking at her email!

It is often quite challenging just to collect your thoughts. In addition, one wants to add an appropriate image as well as links or quotes. I am testing a new feature. The following will be a cut and paste:

First of all, let’s define what I mean by online backup. Online backup is a method of offsite data storage in which files, folders, or the entire contents of a system are regularly backed up on a remote server or computer with a network connection. A number of companies provide online backup services for subscribers whose computers are connected to the Internet, automatically copying selected files to backup storage at the service provider's data vault. Seven (7) advantages of online backup services include:

1. Automatic. Once one establishes their schedule, it is fully automated. There are no tapes to manage, staff to schedule, or vendors to coordinate for pickup and delivery of tapes. Therefore, you save time, money and virtually eliminate errors.

2. Secure. Data is stored on disk and not tape. Tape has a history of failure and it typically occurs at the most inopportune moment. In addition, most tapes are not encrypted. One can only imagine the potential ramifications to your business if customer records were accessed by someone using one of your unencrypted tapes. The story is not much better if you are unable to recover critical data at vital point in time. Online backup services can offer end-to-end encryption AES algorithms that are used both in transit as well as storage. This further ensures the security of your sensitive data. With the online backup service your sensitive data is also automatically stored offsite in a secured data center.

3. Accessible from Anywhere. Web-based centralized management Manage your backups from anywhere with a browser. Jim Kandrac with VAULT400 says, “ blah, blah, blah” Need comments and quote from Jim Kandrac.

4. Efficient Use of Internet: Some of the better online backup services back up only the data blocks in new or changed files, resulting in significantly faster backup times and minimal. Data is also compressed before transmission. In addition they might offer bandwidth throttling. This allows one to define how much of their Internet bandwidth they want to allow to be used for this process during various time windows of the day. For example, you might limit the process to a maximum of 10% of your bandwidth during normal office hours and open it up to 80% for the balance of the day.

How to access what's new:

Update on Buzz

Google announced a couple of further changes to Gmail Buzz, in relation to the privacy concerns people voiced in the past days. Following people will now require a more explicit, not so easy to miss opt-in action. Furthermore, Google Reader and Picasa sites won’t be auto-connected to your Buzz account now (even though they’re public). Third, Gmail will also include a new Buzz settings tab, in which you can (among other things) completely disable your Buzz account. Google in their post says sorry because they feel they “didn’t get everything quite right”.

One setting I’m not sure is easy to find at the moment though is to disable yourself from showing in the “follows” lists of profiles of others... does anyone know more about this? I’ve heard this can be changed by the setting “Display my full name so I can be found in search” in your profile, but if that’s true then it doesn’t seem to be very obvious. Something else I’m not sure about is which settings exactly stop you to be suggested to others to be followed.

Google lobbed a salvo at Facebook on Tuesday, adding Google Buzz, a new social networking capability to its popular Gmail Web e-mail service. Though Google Buzz is somewhat integrated with Twitter, along with a few other services – Flickr and Picasa, most notably – there's no integration with the social network of record, Facebook. And that's a hole Google will have to fill.

For now, Google is rolling the Buzz service out to all its users over the next few days, so sit tight if you don't have it yet. Check buzz.google.com to see if your account is activated

If you are still using IE 6.0 please take note:

In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5. As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.

We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs suite and the Google Sites editor on March 1, 2010. After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail and Google Calendar.

Google Apps will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.

Starting this week, users on these older browsers will see a message in Google Docs and the Google Sites editor explaining this change and asking them to upgrade their browser. We will also alert you again closer to March 1 to remind you of this change.

In 2009, the Google Apps team delivered more than 100 improvements to enhance your product experience. We are aiming to beat that in 2010 and continue to deliver the best and most innovative collaboration products for businesses.

Google has brought a labs section over to its calendar service. There are now six experimental features that can be used to enable additional features such as changing the look and feel of your calendar with a background image, or seeing when your next meeting is going to occur down to the number of hours and minutes.

I particularly like the attachment of documents to your appointments: Attach a Google Docs word processing document, spreadsheet or presentation to your event. (Important: guests do not automatically have permission to view an attached document. You must share each attached document.

Another one that I enjoy is the jump to date: Quickly navigate to dates in the distant future or past (actual time travel not yet supported)

I just read that we can now have up to 25MB for each attachment in GMAIL. That is great! Occasionally I might have one that approaches 10MB ... and use to be a major problem when we used Microsoft Exchange. Life certainly has improved with Google!

Google Labs offers a feature in Gmail to have it automatically converted from their language to your default language. Try it you will love it. If you don't have anyone to test with, look at some of that spam from other countries...just kidding.

Tasks In Calendar

The Labs had provided us tasks in our Gmail. Now, you have tasks in the calendar apps.

Tasks that have due dates will automatically appear on your calendar in the All Day event section.
To create a task with a due date in Calendar, click on an empty space in Month view or in the All Day section and select the Task option.
To attach a due date to an existing task, click the right arrow next to the task in question in the Task list. Then, click on the calendar icon to select a date.
To modify a task's date, simply drag the task to a new date (as you would with a calendar event).
To mark a task as complete from within Calendar, click on the checkbox next to the task.

Brad Gardner gave me a quick heads up on this while we were meeting with Google! Now you can easily add themes to your forms. I quickly changed a form and watched it instantly be reflected in a site that incorporated the theme. Try it, you will like the "eye candy" it delivers!

Sharing Internal Data with Google Apps

If you use things like the Start Page (now sites) or Google App Engine with your Google Apps account, you might find that you cannot create applications or gadgets that Connect behind your firewall on your internal network.

Google released Google SDC — a tool that you can install on a linux box in your organization that basically exposes internal URL’s to things like Google Spreadsheets, Google Gadgets and Google App Engine applications. With access to these local URL’s, you can basically create services that access any of the data that you want to expose.

This definitely makes Google Apps more attractive to organizations that recognize the importance of internally sharing data and creating applications that can use it. Now we can fully replace corporate portals like WebSphere, SharePoint and Oracle!

Add Images to a Gmail Message

Until now it wasn't possible to embed or insert an image into a Gmail message using the web based interface; however Gmail Labs have now made iit possible as an optional feature.

To enable this feature go to the Gmail Labs tab, look for "inserting images" and select enable followed by clicking "save changes."
